Sunset in the Lake District
Another attempt at creating a study of an appealing landscape, this piece focuses mainly on the sky and the effects of light as the sun begins to set. The main element which drew me to this subject was the strange colour transition in the sky - rather than blue to purple to red, the sky blends the opposite direction, blue to yellow to red.
I attempted to capture this transition using saturated, unblended colours which was mostly successful except for a very sharp transition between yellow and red.
I think the clouds in this piece were fairly successful as well, painted with an older more frayed brush so that they appeared lighter and fluffier than the other elements of the piece which were painted using a sharper brush. The colours of the clouds were mostly successful, but I decided to include the orange too late so it ended up mixing a bit with the colours underneath, resulting in a slightly less saturated colour than I would have wanted.
