Layering Study

This piece is an interesting one, since it was constructed from two distinct layers.

The bottom layer consists of a bleary, blurred version of the painting with no distinct detailing.

The top layer, however, is constructed from very brightly coloured, distinct brushstrokes which are used to add elements of the detail of the portrait without entirely concealing the bleak lower layer.
